spiritual counselling

Why do people have counselling?

There are many times in our lives when we all really feel we need someone to listen to us.  This is basically what counselling is - someone to listen to you.  Being heard properly can be really important if you have problems or challenges in your life. You are probably finding it difficult to deal with the issues at hand.  And you may be feeling a bit lost in the midst of trying to cope with the daily life.

It can turn your life ‘upside down'.  Things you can normally cope with, such as going to work, shopping, looking after the kids and socialising, may become more difficult, and have less meaning for you.  Your intimate relationships might change because of changes in how you feel about yourself.  The stress you are under may mean you cannot show the love and attention you want to your partner or children.

You may want to continue with life as normal, but feel frustrated that you cannot.  Many people have confusing and upsetting feelings such as anger and sadness.  And feeling that you're not in control of your life at this time can be very upsetting. All of these feelings are very real and frightening.  There's only so much your mind can process at one time, so these feelings can become overwhelming.

Bottling feelings up can become very draining and make living your life very difficult.  Counselling gives you an opportunity to explore your feelings and express them in a safe place.  A counsellor can help you to find a way to make things less difficult to deal with.

You are bound to have feelings of your own which you don't want to burden your loved one with.  And being able to express your feelings may help you deal with life more effectively.

Counselling can help you sort out many different types of problems. For example, it can help with

  • Coping with your reactions to the issues – fear, changes, anxiety, anger, loss of control, coping with physical (e.g. fatigue, pain or sickness)
  • Exploring personal issues  – spirituality, sexuality, relationships, work and pleasure activities, your goals and ambitions
  • Family and relationship issues  – how to talk to your children, intimacy with your partner, role changes within the family
  • Dealing with practical issues – financial support, mortgages and pensions, making will, transport problems, etc

Generally counselling will work better if you seek it out yourself.  You may not get the best out of it if you don't really want to be there.  At the end of the day it is up to you whether or not you have counselling.

  • Find it difficult to cope with everyday issues such as work or socialising
  • Feel very anxious, depressed, sad, tired or angry
  • Have problems with sleeping and concentrating
  • Have financial, sexual or relationship problems

for any prolonged length of time, then counselling may help you get back on track.

Research has shown that for some people, counselling can help them overcome the depression, anxiety and deal with phobias.

Counselling can help reduce the stress you face and improve your quality of life, provides emotional and psychological support and strengthens your immune system.
